Salakpra nov 2008 Nursery
Since the mid of October 2008, after 2 nursery staff of BTEH, Mr.Samai Borpimind or we generally call him “Uncle Whan” the nursery manager and his daughter (and also his assistance) “Rungfah” came back from workshop training with FORRU-CMU in Chiang Mai, he and his daughter have enthusiastically started to design the layout of the nursery and construct the nursery. The construction of the nursery is now completed. The main pillars are made from bamboo fallen log and nipa plam and nets are used for making the roof and more bamboo trunk for making seedlings bench. Furthermore, they built the net balustrade around seed collection young trees germination area to protect the seed and young trees from seed destroyers such as rats, squirrels, rabbits etc. However, the budget for construction was almost finished, so BTEH will think about adding extra budget. In addition too, for seedlings production, they started to collect some forest trees seeds nearby Salakpra Wildlife Sanctuary already as follows,
Spondias pinnata, Afzelia xylocarpa, Schleichera oleosa, Ficus specie. Anyway, it will only be about 7 months until the next planting event in 2009. The nursery manager attends to find more species for sowing and growing up in the nursery. During 15 - 17 November 08, he and his daughter have participated in an intensive on-site training with FORRU staff again, together with the villagers involved in forest restoration project (support by FORRU). I hope they can use their knowledge to improve working and planning for our Trees for Elephants project also. I think we are fortunate because they are very enthusiastic and honest people.
