100,000 trees for elephants!

Khao Yai augustus 2008The end of the rainy season is coming near and after a couple of weeks of non-stop tree planting, Trees for Elephants 2008 has also accomplished her final goal!

The idea to plant 100,000 trees for Thai elephants was born in august 2007. Yesterday, exactly one year later, the 100,000th tree has been planted. The planting of this tree was an unforgettable moment! Of course I wanted to experience this moment in the Elephant Nature Park, together with Dok Ngeon, Sri Nuan and Faa Sai. We planted a patch of ground opposite the entrance of the Park, which was sponsored by Bring the Elephant Home one and a half years ago. Besides the volunteers and the Elephant Nature Park staff, the local school and a couple of students from Chiang Mai University came over to help. A landmark for Bring the Elephant Home, which we accomplished thanks to your support! And also a great incentive to do a lot more for the Thai elephants and to plant many more trees in the years to come.

Besides our four Thai partner organisations, certainly 1,000 Thai and international volunteers have helped planting the 100,000 trees. By planting trees, the living environment and food situation of Thai elephants will be improved. Also a network of elephant protectors is created.

This is a tremendous start, but we still have a long way to go to secure the future of the Thai elephant. We immediately continue with the preparations for Trees for Elephants 2009. To start up new tree planting projects, we need extra donations. Click here to sponsor some trees!

Greetings from the Elephant Nature Park,
