Sponsor some trees for elephants
In 2008 Bring the Elephant Home started the project Trees for Elephants. Every issue concerning elephants can be retraced to one problem: the enormous deforestation in Thailand. The natural habitat of and food for elephants have shrunk in such a way that extinction looms. Around 1900 there were about one hundred thousand elephants in Thailand. The estimated 1,500 wild elephant remaining today, eat the crops, and get into conflict with the farmers.
So we are starting several reforestation programmes in several areas in Thailand. Our goal: 100,000 trees for the elephants.
One area where we are going to plant trees is Khao Yai National Park. The Thai organisation WERF (Wild Elephant Research Fund) has researched the wild elephants at Khao Yai National Park for years and is devoted to their protection.
In the coming years the problems will only increase, according to WERF. Up till now four adult males have been identified, living solitary at the park. That number will increase soon, since sixteen young males have also been identified. They will soon grow up and start looking for their own grounds. During the dry season the elephant families will also look for food outside the park. In 2008, together with WERF, we will make a nursery and organize three camps to plant trees. In total 25.000 trees will be planted alongside Khao Yai National Park.
We hope you will support our project Trees for Elephants, to increase jungle, e.g. around Khao Yai Park. The land itself will remain property of villages or other Thai organizations.This ensures long term protection of the trees that are planted.
For 50 euros you will help us to plant 50 trees, 100 euros for 100 trees, 300 for 300 and so on. All donations will be used in Thailand to pay for:
* Construction of tree nurseries, at several locations in Thailand.
* Buying young trees, seeding material, nutrients, seeds.
* Educating the farmers concerning planting and protection of trees.
* Tree planting actions
* Educational trips for schools.
* Educating volunteers and students.
* Teaching packages and flyers.
* Starting up village development bank.
