Elephant art contest Ayutthaya

teklogoAt the end of our schoolprogram we have announced an elephant art contest, and gave away paper, drawing pencils and colour pens. First we felt the children didn’t really understand what we wanted them to do, because there’s hardly any response. But after the lesson some children already sit in front of Silver Flower and Sri Nuan sketching their elephantdrawing. With a real elephant as an example! Mr. Duang looks at the drawings shaking his head. Once in a while he calls out to the children: Those ears! These elephants look like an African elephant! Mai Chai, take a close look at the trunk please! The children ask hundreds of questions, and Mr. Duang passionately tells about his love for the elephants. Too bad we can’t understand what he is telling them!

The next day there’s a whole bundle of beautiful drawings of Sri Nuan and Silver Flower laying in our camp. Many drawings show the elephants walking from the city to the jungle. So they have been carefully listening to our elephantlesson. Some drawings show texts like “jungle for elephants” and “Chang prha Baan” (elephant goes home), an other one shows litterboxes with a sign “keep the jungle clean” and some even show female mahouts. And here’s more prize winning drawings.
